Reference Project: Rijnpoort, Antwerp
A green oasis of calm in Antwerp’s dynamic city center
The Rijnpoort project on Rijnpoortvest is a showcase of successful urban redevelopment. Under the direction of Stramien architecten, an outdated office building was transformed and expanded into a mixed-use complex with modern apartments, retail spaces, and offices.
Thanks to its prime location near Het Eilandje, residents enjoy spectacular views over the Scheldt and the iconic Antwerp skyline. The beating heart of the building is the generous rooftop garden: a lush, green enclave that forms a serene counterbalance to vibrant city life.
Technical Challenges & Customization
The transformation from office building to residential volume brought the necessary technical challenges. Due to the addition of extra floors, a thorough inspection and reinforcement of the existing structural framework and foundation was essential.
To visually distinguish the different volumes within the building, an interplay of varied textures and colors was chosen. The uppermost level, executed in white-colored concrete, functions as a beacon above the city.
Our Solutions in Practice
For the aesthetic and structural finishing of the façades, contractor Democo relied on Cantillana’s specialized mortars.
The North Façade (Rijnpoortvest)
For the sleek, white appearance of the Nelissen ‘Super White’ bricks, a specific approach was required:
- Masonry: Executed with Silomur ASM 106 M15 (White). This mortar is specifically developed for low-absorption bricks, preventing staining and allowing the white color to stand out optimally.
- Jointing: Finished with Joint’in 2001 (White) for a seamless, monochrome façade appearance.
The Stijfselrui Façade & Internal Structure
For the section in yellow ‘South Carolina’ brick and the load-bearing walls, the following products were used:
- Rapid-build & Concrete Blocks: Masoned with the reliable Silomur 20/4 (Grey).
- Jointing: The yellow nuances in the facing brick were accentuated with Joint’in 2447 (Light Yellow).
