Thin-bed mortar for a pharmaceutical building in the new business park ‘Eiland Zwijnaarde’
The new business park ‘Eiland Zwijnaarde’, near the E40 and E17 interchange, covers approximately 35 hectares and is being designed and developed in a sustainable and high-quality manner with the support of the Flemish Government. Companies specializing in the knowledge economy, transport, logistics, and water-bound distribution are establishing themselves here, including a major pharmaceutical player with a new production facility and warehouse.
SVR-Architects & ASSAR architects chose a bright red facing brick, ‘Marono Rood’ by Wienerberger, with a perfectly matching joint mortar from Cantillana. Contractor Vanhout is responsible for the structural works.
For no less than 10,000 m² of exterior brickwork, 2 silos with Silomur 12 DBM thin-bed mortar M10 red color (145) were placed on site in collaboration with Kerkstoel Bouwmaterialen. Due to the height of the building, mortar tubs are filled and then lifted by tower crane to each scaffold level.
A DBM mortar type was chosen to allow semi-traditional bricklaying with a thin joint. The thin joint thus enhances the visual appearance of the narrow brick.
A recessed joint was selected, achieved by lightly scraping out the laid joint. For the interior masonry, a 3rd silo was installed with Mur 12/4 - M10 grey masonry mortar according to EN 998-2.
