Silogunit for the expansion of the Howald marshalling yard

For the expansion of the marshalling yard in Howald (Grand Duchy of Luxembourg) by the renowned main contractor Félix Giorgetti, the concrete bases of the overhead line equipment and the embankments alongside the tracks had to be stabilised by means of sprayed concrete.

The fact that the marshalling yard is located in an urban area was a major limiting factor in carrying out the works. Through traffic could not be interrupted, and dust-free execution was extremely important in order to minimise nuisance for the surrounding neighbourhood as much as possible.

In addition, the client CFL (Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois) imposed a very tight schedule because of the railway closure during the execution of the sprayed concrete works.

Finally, the team of subcontractor Geofor Constructions SA was less familiar with the application of sprayed concrete using the dry method. However, thorough training by our partner Techni-Mat and its technician, assisted by Cantillana, enabled them to carry out the works efficiently and entirely within the deadline.

Tailor-made sprayed concrete

Because of the requirements mentioned above, Patrice Couturas, director of Techni-Mat, recommended the dry premixed Silogunit 35/8 XC sprayed concrete for the execution of this project. This type of sprayed concrete is delivered ready to use by Cantillana, dry in a silo on site, and applied using the dry spraying method. The use of dry sprayed concrete Silogunit 35/8 XC in combination with the Cantillana pressure silo equipped with an air compressor and dryer and a high-pressure water lance (100 bar) reduces nuisance caused by dust formation and rebound loss to a minimum.

Autonomous operating system

Once the machine parameters have been set, the choice of the right type of Silogunit sprayed concrete together with the Cantillana pressure silo and the high-pressure water pump guarantees an autonomous operating system for dry concrete spraying. The dry sprayed concrete technique (pneumatic transport) prevents pipe blockages and makes it possible to cover greater distances. Finally, the dry storage of the sprayed concrete in a Cantillana site silo guarantees a continuous supply of material and uninterrupted execution of the works.
