Hippodrome Laeken: Fluid Architecture and Innovative Brickwork in a Green Urban District
In Laeken, Brussels, a remarkable urban transformation has taken place. The former Hippodrome site, which previously served a purely industrial function, has been transformed into a modern, sustainable residential district. The “Hippodrome” project creates a new green lung in the city, where living, care, and commerce go hand in hand.
Cantillana supplied the specific flush-joint mortars for this architectural showpiece, giving the undulating façades their unique character.
The Project: A Sustainable Urban Ecosystem
Project Hippodrome is more than just a residential complex; it is a complete district designed with the future in mind. The project consists of two impressive volumes (up to 8 above-ground floors) and offers space for:
- 199 apartments in a park-like setting.
- A nursery and 4 commercial spaces, creating social dynamism.
- Focus on soft mobility: With 355 bicycle parking spaces and green outdoor landscaping, the project promotes a healthy lifestyle.
Architecture in Motion
The design by A2o architects stands out for its “fluid” aesthetic. The façades appear to ripple through the landscape, breaking up the massiveness of the buildings.
For the finish, Wienerberger – Terca Archipolis Vegas Yellow was selected. This narrow, light-yellow facing brick gives the district a calm and warm appearance, perfectly harmonising with the green park environment.
Contribution: Craftsmanship in Flush-Joint Technique
Contractor Democo Hasselt faced the challenging task of realising approximately 8,000 m² of façade brickwork. With a wave-shaped façade, the precision of the joints and the quality of the mortar are essential.
Mur 8 DSM 3011: The Strength of the Joint
To support the aesthetic of the Vegas Yellow facing brick, Mur 8 DSM masonry mortar in a light grey shade (3011) was chosen.
Why this solution?
- Mur DSM masonry mortar: Bricklaying and jointing are carried out in a single phase. With this method, the mortar is finished directly to the correct depth, resulting in an extremely durable and homogeneous finish.
- Colour consistency: The light grey colour creates a subtle contrast with the yellow brick, further accentuating the architectural lines.
- High quality: DSM mortars are specifically developed for façades exposed to changing weather conditions, which is crucial in an urban environment such as Brussels.
Result
Thanks to the close collaboration between the architect, contractor, and Cantillana, Hippodrome has become a reference project where technical ingenuity and aesthetic beauty come together. The result is a flowing façade structure that will retain its appearance for years to come.
