Hemixveer in Hemiksem: An architectural cruise ship on the Scheldt
Hemixveer, located on the banks of the Scheldt in Hemiksem, is a prestigious new-build project that seamlessly combines tranquility, greenery, and modern architecture. For the realization of this "hidden gem," contractor Van Laere joined forces with Cantillana for the supply of high-quality masonry mortars.
Architectural Concept
The renowned Belgian architects Poponcini & Lootens (Polo Architects) drew inspiration from the atmosphere of a cruise ship moored at the quay. "The stylish architecture of the luxury apartments creates light and space where a chair on the deck is already waiting," according to the architects. The project consists of seven apartment buildings, surrounded by greenery and a walking and cycling embankment, ideal for getting a breath of fresh air.
Quality mortars for refined masonry
For the standard masonry work and the aesthetic finishing of the façades, the choice fell on Cantillana’s expertise:
- Silomur 12/4 in silo: The Iluzo Pagus Grey-Black facing bricks by Wienerberger are traditionally laid using Silomur 12/4. This mortar is perfectly suited to normally absorbent bricks, allowing the façade to be highlighted with very thin joints of approximately 4 mm. To optimize logistics on site, the mortar is delivered in a silo that can be flexibly moved between the different buildings.
- Murocol S masonry adhesive mortar: The plinth of the buildings, executed with Rox Norwegian Grey bricks (MBI), is bonded using the colored adhesive mortar Murocol S (color 5002 – extra white). The thin joints enhance the rough, natural, and slightly glossy character of these bricks. Cantillana delivers Murocol S in bags directly to the site for each building.
